Additionally, we will explore the AI Bill of Rights for Educators, created by the EngageAI Institute, and discuss strategies for implementing equitable and ethical AI practices in educational settings.

Researcher & Practitioner Discussion on AI Problems of Practice in PK-12 Education

Thursday, July 25 from 2-3:30 pm PT/ 4-5:30 pm CT/ 5-6:30 pm ET

Facilitators: Krystal Chatman, Valerie Crawford Meyer, Alicia Lane, Nneka McGee, and Dr. Cassandra Kelley

This session will bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss the different worlds of researchers and practitioners in the development of PK-12 Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and resources. Educators are particularly focused on using generative AI and want to discuss it. Researchers are thinking about generative AI as well as other types of AI systems. In the discussion we will explore how educators and researchers can learn from each other, as well as strategies for translating research findings and recommendations into practitioner action, increasing the quality and quantity of AI implementation and data on it, and identifying innovative, ethical, and equitable approaches to generative AI use in PK-12 learning spaces.

The session aims to engage researchers and practitioners in a deeper conversation that will build a mutual understanding by: (1) establishing their respective domains and (2) thinking about research to address high-priority problems of practice.

Envisioning Future Classrooms with Teachable Robots, Neuroimaging, and Educational Data Mining: A Computer Science Education Research Workshop for PK-12 teachers

As part of a broader impact research study being conducted by members of our team at the University of Pittsburgh, Educator CIRCLS invites PK-12 teachers to participate in a virtual workshop that will present research findings with opportunities for exploration with guided activities, interactive simulations, and collaborative discussions. It will focus on two unique research projects in the field of Computer Science (CS) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) focused on:

• The design of intelligent robots with social behaviors and their potential roles in learning settings (see Collaborative Learning with Nao Robots in Middle School Mathematics)

• Utilizing neuroadaptive learning technologies to assess a learners’ cognitive state with brain imaging (see Non-Invasive Neuroimaging and Educational Data Mining)

The session will also engage PK-12 teachers in reflective conversation about how professional learning programs for CS Education are designed and facilitated for research dissemination in order to better understand their impacts on practice.
